The Witcher 4: Unreal Engine 5 Showcase
It is official: Geralt of Rivia's story is done, but the world of The Witcher is expanding. CD Projekt Red has released the first technical showcase for the next installment in the franchise, currently code-named Project Polaris. The biggest news? The studio is abandoning its proprietary REDengine in favor of Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5.
This shift promises to solve the technical hurdles that plagued the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, allowing developers to focus on narrative and world-building rather than engine stability.
The School of the Lynx
The teaser image released earlier this year showed a medallion buried in snow. While many assumed it was a Cat School medallion, closer inspection—and confirmation from community managers—reveals it is actually a Lynx. This implies a completely new Witcher school, potentially located far to the north or perhaps established by Ciri herself.
If Ciri is indeed the protagonist, gameplay will shift drastically. Ciri cannot undergo the mutations of a traditional Witcher, meaning she relies on her Elder Blood powers (teleportation, time manipulation) rather than potions and signs.
Nanite and Lumen: Next-Gen Visuals
The move to UE5 allows for two groundbreaking technologies: Nanite (virtualized geometry) and Lumen (dynamic global illumination).
- What this means for you: No more "pop-in" of trees or rocks as you ride your horse. Nanite allows for film-quality assets to be rendered in real-time.
- Lighting: Lumen means caves will be genuinely dark, requiring torches, and sunlight will bounce realistically off snow and water without hitting performance as hard as Ray Tracing.
Release Window
While no official date has been set, CDPR's financial calls suggest a release no earlier than late 2026. The game is currently in "pre-production," meaning the story is written, but the world is still being built.
Comments
I'm going to miss Geralt's voice, but a Ciri game has so much potential. Her dash ability is way more fun than rolling.
